Where does an island begin ?

While the answer may seem obvious from a geographical perspective—a stretch of land surrounded by water, distinguished by its coastline—the question becomes more complicated when cultural, political, legal, and ecological dimensions are factored in. These aspects transform the notion of an island into a more nuanced and dynamic concept. Shaped by its traditions and history, as well as its languages and inhabitants, an island represents a melting pot of identities, along with laws that influence the management of its resources and external relations. It also forms a unique ecosystem that contributes to its definition, although this definition cannot be definitively stated.

By adapting the question of what a city is to Corsica - at the heart of his X-Ville project - Jordi Colomer extends his anthropological and poetic investigation into what binds individuals together and what constitutes a community. He addresses themes such as urban planning or the material and intellectual conditions of human existence, giving utopia a central role in its ability to articulate the relationships between the world as it presents itself with its power relations, and the world as it is conceived, with our aspirations, our doubts and our fragilities. Through his interest in foreign representations of Corsica in the 19th century that accompanied the beginnings of tourism, he brings a historical depth to his own perspective and shows that art remains above all a tool for sensitive reflection at the service of a civic conscience that does not provide answers, but allows for an emancipated dialogue.
